Larry Page wants to rebuild the BER airport
The world's got problems and the Google CEO is searching for solutions

(The Verge, September 18, 2014) As if self-driving cars, balloon-carried internet, or the eradication of death weren't ambitious enough projects, Google CEO Larry Page has apparently been working behind the scenes to set up even bolder tasks for his company. The Information reports that Page started up a Google 2.0 project inside the company a year ago to look at the big challenges facing humanity and the ways Google can overcome them. Among the grand-scale plans discussed were Page's desire to build a more efficient airport as well as a model city. To progress these ideas to fruition, the Google chief has also apparently proposed a second research and development lab, called Google Y, to focus on even longer-term programs that the current Google X, which looks to support future technology and is headed up by his close ally Sergey Brin.

The most detailed map ever made of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, includes 219 million stars.

A team led by Geert Barentsen of the University of Hertfordshire in the UK combined 10 years of observations by the Isaac Newton Telescope to build the map, and this image is just a slice.

The map includes every star brighter than 20th magnitude – 1 million times fainter than can be seen with the naked eye. The orange swirls show the density of stars detected and their position in relation to the centre of the galaxy. The brighter the orange, the more stars can be detected shining in that part of space. The dark regions are the edge of the galaxy's Sagittarius spiral arm (near longitude 60 degrees) and the Cygnus X nebula (at around 80 degrees longitude), where the stars are obscured by dust.

NASA’s Balance Mass Challenge:
Using “Dead Weight” on Mars Spacecraft to Advance Science and Technology

AWARD:      $20,000 USD
DEADLINE: 11/21/14

NASA is looking for creative yet practical ideas to find a dual purpose for Balance mass (“dead weight”) that is jettisoned from Mars landers like the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) to balance the spacecraft during entry and landing. Payloads replacing Balance mass should perform some type of scientific or technological function adding to our knowledge base while closely matching the volume and weight characteristics of the original Balance mass. Ideas are welcomed from all disciplines. This Challenge requires only a written proposal.

Challenge Overview

While landing on Mars, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) system ejected approximately 300 kg of Balance mass to offset its center of gravity before atmospheric entry and then rebalance its center of gravity after atmospheric entry. This 300 kg might be used on future missions for Mars-related science and technology applications.

The question NASA hopes to answer is, “If you had up to 150 kg of ejectable mass prior to entry and another 150 kg during the entry and landing phase of a Mars mission, what could you do with it that was useful and advances knowledge in a scientific or technological way?”

This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. Ideas, drawings, and detailed procedures are required. The Challenge award will be contingent upon theoretical evaluation of the proposal by the Seeker.

To receive an award, the Solvers will not have to transfer their exclusive intellectual property (IP) rights to the Seeker. Instead, they will grant to the Seeker non-exclusive license to practice their solutions.
