UPDATE 21.01.2014 - Quote from Ron Baalke, NASA:
"It's most likely a rock that was turned over by one of the rover's wheels, and it tumbled down the slope.  We also discovered a new hole near the rover, which is probably where the rock was unearthed.
The rock itself is very interesting, and we're spending some time to investigate. The rock is conveniently situated near the rover arm."
